Scleral Contact Lenses

Dr. Telega is an optometrist who specializes in fitting this unique contact lens for both vision rehabilitation and corneal disease therapy. Scleral contact lenses are large diameter gas-permeable (hard) contact lenses that are fit to the sclera – or white part of the eye. The comfort and vision can be amazing and are incredible options for patients who have failed traditional style contact lenses for a variety of issues including keratoconus, post radial keratotomy (RK), post corneal transplants (PK), post laser vision correction, cornea ectasias, and dry eye and other ocular surface disorders that can affect vision and comfort of the eye.

Scleral Contact lenses are an incredible option for patients who have a history of corneal disease, including corneal transplants and keratoconus, and ocular surface disease, including dry eye and keratitis, who have failed other treatments. At Shadyside Eye Associates, we have been fitting scleral lenses with advanced technology for over 10 years.

To achieve a comfortable and optimal fit with as little chair time and visits to the office as possible, we utilize incredible technology called a “scleral topography” or “eye surface profiler (ESP)” to map your individual shape and create lenses that are more comfortable and enhance vision in much quicker time. We also utilize anterior segment optical coherence tomography to see how the lenses match your scleral shape to make more accurate changes and remove guess work from the fitting process.
